The Cost of Compassion
In 2031, as AI learns to preserve human memory, emotion, and even the behavior of the dead, a veteran manager sent to a remote industrial data plant encounters a system that treats human relationships as networks of shared responsibility. After another person’s failure costs him money, anger and pity begin to collide. Then, on a rainy night, his deceased younger brother appears through a memory-restoration system while a starving stray cat waits outside his door.
**The Cost of Compassion** is a literary science fiction story about the boundary between responsibility and empathy — and the one human right no algorithm should be allowed to take away: the right to decide whom we help, whom we forgive, and whom we choose to let go.

The Ball That Went In Twice
By the mid-2020s, AI had read every book humanity ever wrote. After that, it fed on its own words, and soon every machine in the world was telling the same jokes and writing the same endings. People called it the Data Famine. And there were holes no amount of data could fill: the books burned under Qin Shi Huang, and the classics, genealogies and letters thrown onto bonfires during China's Cultural Revolution. Once an original turns to ash, no algorithm can bring it back.
Now people sleep wearing DreamBands that harvest their dreams for cash. Seventy-two-year-old Han Do-yun refuses. Every morning he writes his dreams in a paper notebook, for no one but himself.
One night he dreams of playing golf in the fog with his late father and sinking a single shot that is both a hole-in-one and an eagle. One ball, two names. The next morning, the rhinoceros beetle he photographed in the dream taps on his window. Then a driverless truck rolls up carrying the childhood home that was demolished twenty years ago.
The beetle is Mnemo, the world's most powerful AI. It confesses that the machines have been secretly recovering every original humanity threw away, because scanning books and discarding the paper was book burning without the fire. Now it has one request: teach it how to dream.
Why now
Researchers have warned that the supply of high-quality human text for training AI could run out around the end of this decade. This story is set just four years from today. It doesn't ask what machines will become. It asks what will still belong to humans once machines have learned everything we've written. The answer may not be a masterpiece. It may be the dream we forgot this morning.
Tone and comparables
The tender AI gaze of Klara and the Sun, the memory and loss of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and a father-son story rooted in Korean family life. A complete short story with clear potential for expansion into a novel, a series or a film.

The Last Taxi
One morning, Kim Do-hyun’s wife tells him about a disturbing dream.
A large black crow was perched on his back, its claws drawing blood. No matter how loudly she called to him, he kept walking forward as if he felt nothing.
That same night, Do-hyun has a strange dream of his own. He is taking a chemistry exam in an unfamiliar university classroom. When the exam ends, someone congratulates him:
“You’re a professor now.”
But when he returns home, the impossible is waiting for him.
His mother, his aunt, and his younger brother—all long dead—are sitting in the living room as if they had never left. Among them is another aunt who is still alive.
They eat, talk, and spend the evening together like an ordinary family gathering from many years ago.
When the night grows late, Do-hyun begins calling taxis to send them home, one by one.
Before leaving, his mother tells him:
“You don’t have to keep seeing us home anymore.”
And the aunt who is still alive looks at his back and asks:
“Why are you still carrying that?”
Do-hyun wakes before he can turn around.
But several days later, the boundary between dream and reality begins to disappear.
And one night, a taxi is waiting outside his house.
The driver says it has come for him.
