At his first major conference as an independent journalist, a man watches the pen in his hand mysteriously burn to ash just as he learns that the stock holding much of his savings has collapsed. Surrounded by ambitious people talking about the future, he must decide what remains when the tools, money, and identities he once depended on begin to disappear.
