His mother, long dead, stood on the dirt road, ninety-six years old.
On a newly opened road no one had yet walked, a son meets his departed mother once more. And there, coiled in the middle of the path, is the fear he has carried on his back his whole life, grown into an enormous serpent. "You must take hold of it," she says quietly. The son bends his knees and seizes its jaws.
A short story of one man's life—built, collapsed, and built again—of the mother who watched over him to the end, and of a love that goes on aging inside a child's heart long after death. On a road no one has walked, what must we take hold of, and what must we let go?
